Portable Gravity Fed Emergency Eyewash Station Versus A Bottle Type Eyewash Solution
In some situations, it is better to use a portable gravity fed eye wash station versus a bottle type eyewash solution. Although the bottle type eyewash solution is cheaper, it is considered to be an interim solution and still may not meet OSHA requirements or the need for a portable gravity fed eyewash station. It is recommended that you review with OSHA or a certified safety professional to determine if your emergency eyewash station equipment is in compliance with ANSI Z358.1 eyewash standards. Portable gravity fed eyewash stations also are great for use in safety and rescue vehicles and for taking to accident scenes.
Portable eye wash stations come in a few different types. One type is a gravity-fed or gravity flow type, where water flows downward by means of a tank higher than the nozzles and thus the volume of water pushes the flow downward. Gravity-fed or gravity flow units are easily mounted on walls and sometimes wheeled around on cart for mobility. Most gravity-fed eye wash stations emit the standard three gallons per minute and are capable of running uninterrupted for at least 15 minutes.

Another type of portable eyewash station is a bottle eyewash or a wall mount station type, usually in one bottle or two bottle configurations. These personal eye wash products, while practical for some applications, may not be suitable for more hazardous use and also may not meet OSHA requirements. These bottle eye wash stations should only be used as an interim or secondary solution.
One more type of portable eye wash station worth mentioning consists of a pressurized tank connected to standard drench nozzles or a drench hose. These units are extremely portable, and very useful for immediate operation in any environment. However, they often do not produce a shower strong enough or long enough to fit with ANSI standards, and as such, should not be used as a primary emergency eye wash station but only as a secondary station.
All Safety Products carries a complete line of portable eyewash stations at competitive pricing without compromising quality.

Care and Maintenance For A Plumbed Eyewash StationSince All Safety Products, Inc. sells a lot of eyewash stations, we often see a high amount of attention being placed on the inspection and maintenance of portable, gravity-fed type eyewash stations, but often to the neglect of the necessary regular cleaning and maintenance of plumbed eyewash stations. ISSUE IDENTIFIED: In particular, according to an … Continue reading » Not having an emergency eye wash stationNot having an emergency eye wash station available for the protection of your employees’ eyes is one of the most issued OSHA citations. According to the OSHA standards, specifically §1910.151(c), eyewash stations need to be located no more than 10 seconds within the work area, and where a strong acid or caustic is used, the … Continue reading » Be sure to check your eyewash inspection tagBe sure to check your eyewash inspection tags. When OSHA does happen to inspect your company, they will be looking for a regular inspection record. Basic information you need to keep on record is date, who inspected by, comments. These smaller bottle eyewash stations, although less costly and easier to set up and requiring less space, may only be … Continue reading »
